Product Description

The Woman with the Elephant Heart is a story of my personal journey to self-discovery and healing. Though this is the path I traveled, it really could be any woman’s path: the individual journey that too many women feel they are walking alone. This is not a book about my experiences, but more an expression of the feelings that those experiences evoked. It represents common bonds shared within the hearts of other women.

This is a story of hope, kinship and comfort for women who had to cope with things that could not be fixed. Perhaps they faced a life with unexpected change, or had a pain too large to bear. My intention is for you to find your own voice within the words and illustrations. They are meant to be a catalyst for your own inner journey or validation and support for the path you continue to travel. The book follows my personal process of healing. However, the illustrations and text may be read in the order most relevant to your own life and revisited whenever you wish.

Deborah came to us and asked if we wanted to be involved . After the first few pages I knew it was a great idea. The images and thoughts are heartfelt and are easily transferable from one person to another. Through her artwork, Deb has a great ability to communicate on a level that most of us don’t on a day-to-day basis. I feel very honored and grateful to work with her on this project. I have been able to see the project bloom over the years.

Hi Deb, Wanted to let you know that I received an email from a school headmistress in Uganda. She is the one who I sent pictures of from our trip there last summer. She has taken our pad project to 2 other schools and 2 churches. This seems to be helping the young girls stay in school. I am so happy about that. But she told me that when she teaches the class I designed to go along with this (how girl’s bodies change, health and hygiene, etc), she always uses the book I left for her, which is now her favorite book – The Woman With the Elephant Heart. She told me that the woman even ask her to read this to them a second time during the class! They love it and so do I. Your words and art bring so much joy to these women in rural Africa. Thank you for giving me this wonderful book to use as not only a teaching tool but also as a way to bond with our village women and girls. We are all the same. Our team heads back in June and I am teaching the pad project in the women’s prison so your book will once again be making a journey across the Atlantic.
